Why is vitamin D essential to good health?

Vitamin D

Vitamin D might not seem to be an important element of joint and bone health, but without it, calcium cannot be adsorbed and utilized properly by your body, so make sure your calcium supplement contains vitamin D in addition to calcium. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, which means that it needs some dietary fat to adsorb into the body. Vitamin D is created in the liver and kidneys, but it can also be made within the body by exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Vitamin D is also essential in the body because it helps maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorous, which are some of the essential minerals for good bone and body health. A deficiency of vitamin D can lead to rickets and lower calcium levels, among other ailments. Vitamin D is found in most dairy products, and many types of fish, including salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel.
