Know the Signs of Vitamin Deficiency

The food people eat every day generally contains most of the nutrients humans need to survive and thrive. However, some people may not get sufficient amounts of certain vitamins, which can lead to contracting a serious medical condition. A few vitamin deficiencies have known ill effects on health.

Vitamin A Deficiency

Insufficient amounts of vitamin A in the diet can lead to dry, cracked skin; dryness of mucus membranes; problems with tasting, hearing and smelling; nerve damage; problems with wound healing and poor resistance to respiratory infections.

Vitamin C Deficiency

People who do not consume enough fresh fruits and vegetables experience Vitamin C deficiency. Symptoms include bleeding gums, tooth loss, nosebleeds, shortness of breath, painful joints and slow healing of wounds.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with rickets in children, a condition of soft bones and weak muscles. Adults with this deficiency experienced soft bones that fracture easily.

Vitamin K Deficiency

Vitamin K is an important factor in allowing blood to clot normally. Vitamin K deficiency can cause uncontrolled bleeding.

Vitamin B Deficiencies


  • Vitamin B1 deficiency - causes upset stomach, weight loss, depression and problems with concentration.

  • Vitamin B2 deficiency -- causes anemia, inflammation of mucus membranes, skin rashes, sore mouth and tongue, burning eyes and cracked lips.

  • Vitamin B6 deficiency -- causes skin rashes, anemia, seizures and nerve damage.

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency -- causes pernicious anemia, nerve damage, risk of stomach cancer and psychiatric symptoms.
