July 4, 2008, Newsletter Issue #123: Vitamin D Overdose

Tip of the Week

Vitamin D overdose does not occur very often, but it does happen, so it pays to be aware of the symptoms and what can cause vitamin D overdose. Too much vitamin D in the body can cause high blood pressure, and it can also cause nausea, vomiting, and lack of appetite. Excessive urination and thirst are also symptoms, and if left untreated it can lead to kidney failure.

A vitamin D overdose in the body is usually caused by long-term exposure in factories or industrial accidents. Too much exposure to the sun does not cause vitamin D overdose, no matter what some people believe. Vitamin D overdose can also be caused by too much calcium in the blood, so the two supplements are related. If you are diagnosed with vitamin D overdose, your doctor will probably tell you to stop taking both vitamin D and calcium supplements.
